While on an expedition to the mysterious Skull Island looking for oil deposits, petroleum exec Fred Wilson (Jeff Bridges in one of his earliest roles, before he became synonymous with The Dude), Paleontologist stowaway Jack Prescott (Charles Grodin), and shipwreck survivor Dwan (Jessica Lange) encounter a primordial marvel: an enormous ape that the inhabitants of the island worship like a deity. Dwan is captured as an offering to the creature, forcing Fred and Jack to undergo a rescue mission unlike any other. All the while Dwan is forming an unlikely bond with her rather large simian captor.
