Rose Sayer (Katherine Hepburn) and her brother are British missionaries working in an East African village. When Charlie Allnut (an Oscar winning performance by Humphrey Bogart) brings the siblings news of the Great War, and the Germans are closing in to round up enemies of the nation. With nowhere to go, Rose convinces Charlie to take her up the river on his boat The African Queen to take the fight to the Germans stationed up the river.
